LINDALË

by Werna Wolf

/
1.
Nuruhuinë 06:12
The Shadow's shadow looms Over Arda's lands – Death with empty hands Has come to till the tombs – The sea, the sky, the star, They mourn the morning mist, And all that shall be missed – Come, come, Ilúvatar! Now shines the brightest light, Never so much seen – yet Has the Sun not set ? This is the darkest night –
2.
Hróta 02:39
A veil upon a veil, A cave within a cave, No need for stick and flail, For you are Hróta's slave.
3.
Namárië 05:04
Gone the fallen leaves the wind has swept,
Forever lost the feathers of countless years,
The ruins of wordless walls beyond the West,
The everlasting echo of swords and spears —
Beneath the flickering flames in Varda’s vault,
There flows a river blue without a halt…

Who shall now refill the chalice in my hands?

For now has Varda’s veil of mist and clouds
Enshrined the vales and mounts of Valimar,
And darkness, spreading like a thousand shrouds,
Has drowned the paths of yore — and nevermore
Shall the jewels of Calacirya shine,
Nor ring the Eastern bells within their shrine!

Namarië! Who shall now find Valimar?
It might be you indeed. Namarië!
(Based on the eponymous poem by JRR Tolkien)
4.
Anarórë 01:45
From the East it came – The Light that ever shines, Yet never burns the same, Upon the Elders' lines.
5.
Rámalókë 04:39
Within and around Mountains and vales, His treasures abound – Feathers and scales – Above and below, Oceans and clouds, They heave and billow, Breathing out shrouds – The earth and the sky, Spiraling up, The snake and the fly, Conjuring up – The fish and the bird Swimming with wings, His breath and his word Shaping his rings – Life and death the same in Rámalókë's name.
6.
Nolwë 02:00
One are all things born – Yet from the Only Truth Long have men been torn: Thus speaks the sage in sooth. Hearken to the Fates And listen to the Lore: Ancient Wisdom waits Beyond Henfanwa's door! A welcome halt Your heart to sound. Look with eyes unsealed: Your chest a treasure holds. What was once concealed The Wise Man's word unfolds – One are all things born – Yet from this Only Truth Long have men been torn: Thus spoke the sage in sooth.
7.
Henfanwa 05:39
Henfanwa, Henfanwa, wherefore Have you closed the lockless door? We the cave dwellers crave the light Without – oh, can't you hear us scream? We the gravediggers brave the night Within – oh, can't you see us gleam? Henfanwa, Henfanwa, wherefore Have you closed the lockless door? Mother, Matter, Space and Time, Their darkness creeps upon us all – Father, heed their artful rhyme, This madness seeps out on the Soul! Henfanwa, Henfanwa, wherefore Have you closed the lockless door?

Úquétima 01:22
It is the Ultimate of Talk — The Impotence to Tell — Emily Dickinson, 1863

LINDALË, part II: wernawolf.bandcamp.com/album/lindal-part-ii

c================o::::o

UPDATE: due to the dubious legal nature of samples and quotes in music, and in order to keep the DIY spirit of Dungeon Synth alive, I have decided to replace all the copyrighted samples I had used with recordings made at home, using new lines and extracts from my own poems. I hope you like the result, as it is even darker than it used to be.

You might, however, find the original version of the album somewhere on the Internet...

All things are One in God. Yet have we not forgotten - the ultimate Truth? You stand at the crossroads of eternity, imprisoned by your beliefs. A welcome halt your heart to sound.

Veils upon veils, the mystery unfolds - your chest a treasure holds. Far too long have you dwelt in the cave, fearing the night would forever last, waiting for the sun to rise as darkness crept within your soul!

That is - until you heard the call of Lindalë, urging you to quest for the key that once fell inside Rámalókë's mouth. Ancient Wisdom awaits beyond Henfanwa's door - unspeakable, for silent is the Word.

Will you have the courage - to trespass?

c================o::::o

This album is meant as a tribute to Tolkien's poetic genius as well as to Summoning's musical masterpieces. It also obviously draws inspiration from many other sources (European folklore, legends and fairy tales, movies like "Willow", "The Dark Crystal" and "Excalibur", ancient philosophy, electronic music from the 1970's and 1980's, etc.).

It was mainly composed and recorded using a Shure SM58 microphone, a Roland Juno G synthesizer as midi keyboard and Logic Pro, but this doesn't really matter, does it?

Just like the Truth, you can recognize Beauty the way you recognize your reflection in the mirror, simply remembering what you have always known. If I have by any chance come close to what may be deemed beautiful, then don't forget I can only be held responsible for whatever mars the ideal this work was aimed at reaching.

Now do what you will with this album - these tracks aren't mine anymore. Live or die. Either way, what bliss!

P.S.: don't you dare forget to read the poems included in the lyrics!

All songs composed and recorded in 2023 by Werna Wolf.

Original artwork by Werna Wolf, based on histoirescochonnes.blogspot.com/2014/10/histoire-cochonne-2-56.html, a cartoon made about ten years ago by his cartoonist self, which itself was based on John Colliers's 1887 painting, "Lady Godiva".

The background noise in "Nolwë" comes from my garden and was recorded on a summer evening.

The original vocal samples used on this album came from Francis Ford Coppola's "Dracula" (1992), J.R.R. Tolkien's reading of his own poem, "Namárië", John Boorman's "Excalibur" (1981) and Jim Henson and Frank Oz's "The Dark Crystal" (1982). Don't look for them, they're not in the songs present on this page anymore, since, in spite of all the modifications I had made, it still wasn't clear whether or not this was legal.
